Tottenham told to sell two big names after Giovani Lo Celso reveal – pundit

Noel Whelan has urged Tottenham to “cut their losses” and “take the pain” by selling Tanguy Ndombele and Giovani Lo Celso for knock-down prices this summer.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted clearing the deadwood at Spurs will allow Antonio Conte to put his own stamp on the squad.

A Tottenham source told this site on Wednesday (1 June) that Villarreal are in advanced talks to sign midfielder Lo Celso permanently – with a fee of around £20million likely to be accepted.

Football Insider also revealed last month (16 May) that Spurs are set to make Ndombele train alone again this summer when he returns from his loan spell at Lyon.

It is understood that the French club are not planning to trigger the £50million-plus option in the midfielder’s loan deal.

As per the Daily Mail (26 May), Tottenham are also looking to offload Bryan Gil this summer, just 12 months after he arrived at the club for a reported £22million.

Whelan admitted Tottenham are likely to take “financial hits” on all of their out-of-favour stars.

“Players like Lo Celso and Ndombele just haven’t done enough for Tottenham,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“You’ve just got to cut your losses, take the pain, and lose a bit of cash.

“There’ll be a lot of deadwood out the door at Tottenham this summer. They’ll want to raise as much money as possible for Conte to go out and spend in the market.

“They will be taking financial hits on these kinds of players. The upside is that Conte can then assemble his own squad with players he wants to use.

“They’ve got the Champions League to contend with now. They’ll need a fair few coming in as well.”
