Tottenham told to sign ‘incredible’ Sam Johnstone alternative amid Man United twist – pundit

Noel Whelan has told Tottenham and Man United to turn their attentions to “incredible” Southampton goalkeeper Fraser Forster as their transfer tussle over Sam Johnstone continues.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 34-year-old’s contract status makes a swoop “even more tempting”.

Forster turned in a fantastic performance as Southampton beat Arsenal 1-0 on Saturday (16 April), making six saves – including a fine stop from Buyako Saka.

The former Celtic goalkeeper, who was part of the most recent England squad, is out of contract in June.

According to Sky Sports (12 April), Man United and Tottenham are in hot pursuit of England international Johnstone – with his contract also up in June.

Whelan suggested a move for Forster could be a possibility for the top six duo.

“Forster has been a fantastic goalkeeper for a long, long time now,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“He’s been incredible, and he’s got that England call-up to back that up now as well.

“I can see him at Tottenham or Man United, absolutely. Good, English goalkeepers who know the Premier League – they’re hard to come by.

“Him being a free agent just makes that deal even more tempting.”

Tottenham’s number one is Hugo Lloris, while Man United rely on David De Gea between the sticks.

Forster has played 158 times for Southampton during an eight-year spell at the club.

He has notched three clean sheets in 15 top-flight games this term.
