Tottenham told to U-turn on John McGinn after journalist’s transfer update – Robinson

Paul Robinson has suggested Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn isn’t the answer for Tottenham in midfield.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former White Hart Lane number one questioned whether the 27-year-old would fit into Antonio Conte’s system.

Tottenham are in the market for midfield reinforcements this summer.

According to The Telegraph‘s Mike McGrath (18 May), McGinn is on a list of potential targets after another impressive Premier League campaign.

The Scotland international is said to be highly rated by staff at Spurs.

McGinn’s contract at Villa Park runs until the end of June 2025.

Robinson does not believe McGinn would get in ahead of Rodrigo Bentancur or Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

“McGinn isn’t a holding midfielder,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs. “He’d give Spurs a different option.

“Hojbjerg has done exceptionally well in the second half of the season. He has improved alongside Bentancur.

“It is an area I expect Spurs to look at it but I’m not sure McGinn is the answer. He is better higher up the field for me. I’m not sure he fits the system.

“McGinn would be a good player to strengthen the squad but I’m not sure he’d be a starter. He’d give them another option but I’m not sure it would be worth the amount it would cost.

“It would have to be a top-class player to break up the partnership of Bentancur and Hojbjerg. I’m not sure McGinn disrupts that.”
