Tottenham told to U-turn on Matt Doherty after confirmed news – Robinson

Paul Robinson has suggested Tottenham should keep Matt Doherty and sell Emerson Royal this summer.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former White Hart Lane number one claimed Doherty, 30, was more impressive and consistent than Emerson, 23, last season.

On Tuesday (19 July), Spurs confirmed the signing of Djed Spence, 21, from Middlesbrough on a five-year deal.

According to the Guardian (20 July), Spurs are willing to listen to offers for Doherty and Emerson following the arrival of the right wing-back.

Harry Winks, Tanguy Ndombele, Bryan Gil, Giovani Lo Celso and Japhet Tanganga are also said to be available for transfer.

When asked by Football Insider if Tottenham should get rid of both Doherty and Emerson this summer, Robinson said: “It is quite obvious that one of them will be allowed to leave if the opportunity arises.

“At the end of last season Matt Doherty impressed. We saw the best of him.

“Out of the two of them he played the better and for longer periods. He showed just why Tottenham bought him. He is effective when used in the right wing-back position.

“Who are the potential suitors for both though? I’m not sure it will be a race to the door as to who leaves first.

“Doherty gave more to the side last year for me so I’d like to see him stay. He’d be the one for me.”
