Tottenham transfer explored after January enquiries for £18m striker – report
By Harvey Byrne
European giants Wolfsburg and Galatasaray are ready to explore a move for Tottenham striker Vincent Janssen in the summer, according to a report.
The Evening Standard has claimed that both clubs made an enquiry for the 22-year-old forward in January, but Spurs were unwilling to allow any first-team members to leave.
The Holland international is considered star forward Harry Kane’s understudy, but after signing from AZ Alkmaar for £18million in the summer he has so far disappointed.
Janssen made the switch to north London with a lot of promise after scoring a brilliant 32 goals in 49 appearances in all competitions in the last campaign.
However, he has scored just four goals from the penalty spot in 26 appearances for Mauricio Pochettino’s side and is currently struggling to get in the team over Kane.
Tottenham have shown that they don’t necessarily need Janssen as they sit in second place in the Premier League table.
But, if the player does leave in the summer window then it is more than likely that Pochettino will bring another forward in to play backup to Kane.
The Argentine boss currently has Janssen and Son Heung-min as his alternate options for the England international, but neither are threatening Kane’s position in the team.
Football Insider verdict:
Tottenham coaches will now know whether Janssen has what it takes to become something at Spurs. The staff watch him each day in training and have been doing so since the summer and if he is like he is out on the pitch then he simply isn’t good enough for the Premier League. He wouldn’t be the first player to make the move from Holland with a lot of goals under his belt to then struggle to find his form in England. However, at the age of 22 Janssen still has age on his side and Pochettino may still see something in him. Additionally, the £18million price tag was a major expense and if Tottenham do look to sell him then they will want to make a large sum of it back, which Galatasary and Wolfsburg may be unwilling to do.
