Tottenham transfer news: Emerson Royal tipped to lead summer exodus after £20m report – pundit

Noel Whelan has suggested Emerson Royal could lead an exodus of players out of Tottenham this summer.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the Lilywhites should “absolutely” sell the 23-year-old if they can get their money back.

As reported by the Sun (8 March), Tottenham are willing to listen to offers for the right-back this summer, just a year after his arrival from Barcelona.

The same paper has claimed (9 March) Atletico Madrid are interested in striking a deal to sign Emerson for £20million.

Whelan suggested the defender could be one of several departures from Spurs this summer.

Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “With different managers coming in and different players working under managers, you very swiftly and quickly figure out what it is you want and don’t want.

“It doesn’t take them long to figure out a player. It doesn’t take long to figure out if they can trust them and if they need to improve.

“Obviously, Antonio Conte feels that he needs to. He’s not seen enough from Emerson Royal to believe that he’s got a future at Tottenham and he could be first out.

“These are difficult conversations between players and managers but they’ve got to be truthful ones.

“I think there might be a few truths spoken at the end of the season to a few players at Tottenham regarding their futures and where else they’ll be playing.

“If they can get the money back in, absolutely. He’s been very hit and miss on that right-hand side.

“I don’t think too many people have been impressed with Royal since his time at Tottenham. It’s one of these things where the difficult decisions have to be made by managers.”
