Tottenham transfer news: Spurs expert reveals why Conte wanted to sign Rodrigo Bentancur as ‘brilliant’ £15.7m deal hailed
Rodrigo Bentancur is a “brilliant” signing and he will bring a winning mentality to Tottenham.
That is according to Spurs insider John Wenham, who regularly breaks news about the club on his Lilywhite Rose social media channels.
On Monday (31 January) Tottenham announced the permanent signing of Bentancur, 24, from Juventus.
He signed a contract until 2026 and became Antonio Conte’s first signing as Spurs boss.
Wenham has hailed the financial side of the deal and admitted he can’t wait to see the midfielder in action.
“Bentancur is a Uruguay international who has arrived for around £15.7million,” Wenham told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.
“Then there’s just under £5million in add ons which will be spread over five seasons according to Juventus’ website.
“It seems like a sensible business, especially for a guy who has made over 150 appearances for Juventus during a very successful period for them.
“I think he will bring a winning mentality to the squad and I think he’s a brilliant addition. That’s why Conte wanted him.
“He’s going to be used, which sounds like a daft thing to say. Yes, we have let three midfielders go and only signed one to replace them.
“But Ndombele, Alli and Lo Celso weren’t playing and are not players Conte wants to use.
“Bentancur very much is, he wouldn’t be here if Conte didn’t want him.
“I’m sure I’m not the only Tottenham fan who is excited by this.”

Bentancur leaves Juventus after making 181 appearances for the club.
He won seven pieces of silverware in Turin, including three Serie A titles.
