Kieran Maguire: Tottenham ‘want to resurrect Super League’ amid new political twist

Tottenham are among the clubs who likely want to “resurrect” the Super League – but plans for an independent regulator will make it exceedingly difficult to do so.

That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the government’s plans to introduce a watchdog to safeguard supporters’ interests and regulate club finances.

Per The Telegraph last Saturday (31 December), an imminent white paper will outline proposals to grant an independent regulator the power to stop clubs from joining breakaway leagues.

Spurs were one of six Premier League clubs that took part in the Super League insurrection in April 2021 before almost immediately withdrawing in the face of an unprecedented fan backlash.

They have, however, refused to clarify whether that stance has changed amid attempts by Barcelona, Real Madrid and Juventus to revive the rebel competition.

But Maguire claims that, however much the North Londoners might be keen to unlock the riches that the Super League would surely offer, the government’s plans will act as a major bulwark.

“There is no doubt that these proposals would make things more difficult,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

The owners of the Super League clubs would, in an ideal world, want to resurrect the competition.

But they saw the hostile reaction from fans, who are a very much ignored group of stakeholders by many clubs, including Spurs.

If the proposals outlined in the rumoured white paper and subsequent legislation do go ahead, it would need both the approval of the FA and fan groups before a Super League could take place.

On the basis of present hostility from fan groups, it would have to be very persuasive argument put forward by the Super League clubs for a closed-shop competition to be part of football going forwards.
