Current £25k-a-week attacker fails to top worst Tottenham signings of PL era

4. David Bentley

Signed from: Blackburn Rovers – Fee (approx): £15million – Appearances: 62- Goals: 5

Former Arsenal youngster Bentley made the move across north London via an impressive spell at Blackburn Rovers, which was enough to convince the Lilywhites to splash out in 2008.

Unfortunately for both player and club, he justified his big money price tag just once, launching a howitzer of a shot during a 4-4 draw with Spurs’ local rivals and Bentley’s former side, a strike which has gone down in Spurs folklore.

Shipped out on loan to Birmingham City, West Ham, FC Rostov and then to Blackburn, he never rediscovered the form which saw him pick up seven England caps, and ended up retiring at the age of 29 for personal reasons, claiming he had fallen out of love with football.

One of the biggest ‘what could have been’ stories in football during the 21st century, his price tag and failure to live up to his potential earns him a place on this list.
