Transfer shock as Celtic mainstay wanted as back-up by Premier League giants – report
Manchester United are interested in making a shock signing in the shape of Celtic’s Craig Gordon as a back-up to David de Gea, according to a report.
The Scottish Sun is claiming that the 35-year-old Hoops mainstay is on the list to replace Sergio Romero, who seems certain to leave the club in the summer.
Gordon, who made 45 appearances for the Bhoys last season, is reportedly joined on Jose Mourinho’s goalkeeper shortlist by Joe Hart and Ben Foster.
Gordon has been linked with a move to the Premier League before, as the Hoops reportedly tuned down multiple bids from Chelsea for the Scotland international last season.
It will be interesting to see if Brendan Rodgers would do the same thing this summer, if any bids for Gordon come in.
Football Insider verdict
This transfer news has come completely out of the blue. There seemingly haven’t been any rumours about Gordon since last January, when Chelsea were desperate to add the player to their Premier League winning squad as back-up goalkeeper. Jose Mourinho must be impressed by the way Gordon has recovered from so many injury problems to keep on playing. Even though he is 35-years-old, Gordon still made over 40 appearances for the Hoops last season. Brendan Rodgers’ faith in him was shown, as he brought Gordon back into the team when he recovered from his knee injury, despite some good performances from Scott Bain. It is a mark of how highly though of Gordon is in the Premier League that for the second season in a row one of the biggest clubs in England is reportedly interested in signing him. It will be intriguing to see what happens next regarding this story.
