Don Hutchison believes that West Ham are barking up the wrong tree in their pursuit of Cologne forward Anthony Modeste.

Modeste scored a staggering 27 goals in 37 matches across all competitions for Cologne last season, and it's easy to see why West Ham would want him after their current strikers struggled to find the net under Slaven Bilic's charge in 2016/17.

However former Irons midfielder Hutchison doesn't seem overly keen on the former Blackburn man.

"West Ham in for Modeste. So sorry West Ham fans but he isn’t for me," he said on his personal Twitter account on Friday night.

"I don’t care about price tags, I’ve never judged a player on 'value'. I’m not a big fan of his."

The 46-year-old did go on to admit that 'he could be wrong though'.

Hutchison had two spells at West Ham during his playing career which saw him turn out for a multitude of different clubs.

He first moved to Upton Park in 1994 after a stint at Liverpool, but only spent two years playing in the famous claret and blue kit.

The ex-Scotland international would later return to East London in 2001 for a club record fee worth £5million.

West Ham's current transfer record was spent on Andre Ayew in his £20million switch from Swansea last summer and it seems that will be beaten yet again this year if the Irons manage to complete a deal for Modeste.
