Danny Mills has urged Celtic to complete a deal for Sunderland striker Charlie Wyke.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Leeds United and England defender claimed signing the 28-year-old on a free transfer would be a "very, very good deal".

Sunderland confirmed in their retained list released last month they had offered their top goalscorer a new deal but are yet to agree terms.

Wyke scored 30 goals in 53 games across all competitions last term as the Black Cats missed out on promotion after losing the play-off semi-final.

His performances earned him a place in the PFA League One team of the year and the club's supporters player of the season award.

Asked whether a free transfer would be a no brainer for Celtic, Mills told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: "Without a doubt.

"They're going to need as much quality as they can get. A free transfer, Ok, you may have to spend a bit more on wages but it takes a huge chunk of risk out of any sort of deal that you're looking to put together.

"You get a proven player, a proven goalscorer and you don't have to pay a fee upfront.

"Yes, I would say it would be a very, very good deal."

Celtic will be in the market for forward reinforcements with Odsonne Edouard expected to leave this summer.
