Newcastle United 'close' to making 'superstar' signing - pundit

Celtic and West Ham legend Frank McAvennie joined the Football Insider stable in June 2020 and has not disappointed with his own brand of unique punditry. He loves talking football almost as much as he loved scoring goals, and still has close links in the dressing room at Parkhead.

Newcastle United are "close" to making a "superstar" signing after their positive start to the season.

That's according to former West Ham hitman Frank McAvennie, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Magpies' January plans.

Newcastle

Newcastle will be third at Christmas after winning their final game before the World Cup break, beating Chelsea 1-0 on 12 November.

McAvennie insists the club will soon make a signing that everyone in the world of football will take notice of.

"Newcastle have done extremely well and it's all down to the hard work of Eddie Howe," McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

"Newcastle have also done all of this without signing a proper superstar. After the takeover, they were linked with some of the biggest names on the planet.

"While they have recruited well, there hasn't really been that massive signing where everyone has stopped to look.

"I do think that signing is close though. Maybe January, maybe next summer after they get into Europe. A proper statement signing.

"They have the money to do it, everyone knows it. So it's a matter of time rather than if they will, if that makes sense.

Newcastle

Newcastle signed Nick Pope, Sven Botman, Alexander Isak and Matt Targett in the 2022 summer window.

The arrival of Isak broke the club’s transfer record.
