Southampton are eager to get transfer revenge on Leeds United by winning the race to sign Swansea City sensation Daniel James, Football Insider understands.

With the McKinstry deal all but done, a source at the Premier League club has told Football Insider they want to beat the Yorkshire giants to the capture of James, who has emerged as one of the Championship's most sought-after players.

James was set to join Leeds on transfer deadline day in January after undergoing a medical and agreeing terms until the Welsh side pulled out of the deal at the last minute.

Leeds have kept the door open for a move again for James this summer, but the winger's superb form for Swansea has brought him close attention from the top flight.

Southampton have joined the chase for the speedster and want to push Leeds down the pecking order in the pursuit of James.

The Wales international enhanced his growing reputation with a stunning individual display in Swansea's win over Stoke on Tuesday night and scouts from Premier League clubs have been stepping up their checks on the 21-year-old in recent weeks.

The former Hull City youngster has broken into the Wales squad this season following his impressive displays for Swansea and he scored the winning goal in last month's Euro 2020 qualifier against Slovakia.
