Danny Cowley will be appointed the new manager of Portsmouth after arriving at the club on Wednesday afternoon to finalise terms with the board, Football Insider understands.
The 42-year-old former Huddersfield Town and Lincoln City boss has verbally agreed to replace Kenny Jackett, who was sacked on Sunday.
Cowley and his brother Nicky, who is lined up once again to be his assistant manager, arrived at Portsmouth early on Wednesday afternoon.
They met with the owner Michael Eisner and the board of directors before penning short-term contracts running until the end of the season.
Barring any hitches, the managerial duo will then take training for the first time on Thursday charged with galvanising Pompey's faltering promotion bid.
Luring the Cowleys is regarded as a major coup in League One circles.
This is not only due to their track records, which have seen them secure five promotions together as well as rescue Huddersfield and keep them in last season's Championship.
But they have also agreed to accept Portsmouth's offer of three-month contracts.
That is believed to have put off other managerial candidates including David Stendel, who has also been linked with the vacant Charlton Athletic post.
The Cowleys have been out of work since leaving Huddersfield last July with one match of the 2019-20 season remaining.
Portsmouth have 12 matches of their campaign remaining and are well placed to mount a top-six challenge despite Tuesday's defeat to Peterborough United.
Pompey, under the temporary charge of Joe Gallen, slumped to a sixth defeat in their last eight league games.
That leaves them 10th in League One and three points adrift of the final play-off spot.
