Ben Whiteman is on his way to Preston North End tonight for a medical and to put the finishing touches to his transfer, Football Insider understands.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider the 24-year-old is now heading to west Lancashire to finalise a deal.

Preston had an offer worth £1.5million knocked back yesterday but it now appears there has been a breakthrough in talks.

He would become North End's first permanent transfer of the January window after the loan signings of midfielder Jayson Molumby, striker Ched Evans and goalkeeper Daniel Iversen.

The Donny captain has emerged as one of the best players in League One in recent seasons and has racked up an impressive 19 goals and 14 assists in 141 games in the division.

Whiteman has long been linked with a move away from the Keepmoat Stadium and he now looks set to finally leave Rovers.

He missed their FA Cup third-round tie against Blackburn Rovers at the weekend after reportedly having his head turned by a Championship move.

If he completes a move to Deepdale it will come as a timely boost for manager Alex Neil who may lose out-of-contract midfield pair Daniel Johnson and Ben Pearson in January.
