Sunderland are set to table an opening bid for Wolves defender Dion Sanderson as they look to seal a permanent deal, Football Insider has learned.

The League One club know they will be competing with teams from a higher level for the 21-year-old but are pulling out all the stops to get him.

Sunderland sporting director Kristjaan Speakman is spearheading his club’s pursuit of Sanderson and is aware on competition from Championship clubs as well as the possibility of a Premier League club entering the race.

A source at the Stadium of Light has told Football Insider that will not stop the north-east club from testing the water at Wolves with an opening offer.

Speakman has continually kept in contact with his counterpart Scott Sellars at Wolves throughout Sanderson’s loan period with the intention of signing the starlet permanently for next season.

The Black Cats hope the relationships that have been built - between Sanderson and the hierarchy, coaching staff, teammates and fans - will be a strong enough to swing a deal.

Sanderson was hugely impressive in his 27 appearances for Lee Johnson's side prior to a season-ending injury in mid-April.
