Tottenham told to complete signing after source's Souttar update - pundit

Frank McAvennie

Celtic and West Ham legend Frank McAvennie joined the Football Insider stable in June 2020 and has not disappointed with his own brand of unique punditry. He loves talking football almost as much as he loved scoring goals, and still has close links in the dressing room at Parkhead.

Frank McAvennie isn't surprised to hear Tottenham are targetting defensive signings in January.

The former West Ham hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, told Spurs they must strengthen their backline as soon as possible.

It is understood the former Wolves manager tried to sign the defender when he was at Molineux.

Souttar signed a new long-term deal with Stoke in February, meaning he is tied to the club until the end of June 2025.

McAvennie cited Tottenham's recent performance against Newcastle as proof that Nuno needs to bolster his defence.

"I mean if they are going to strengthen any area, it needs to be the defence," McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

"The problem with these defenders, is strikers want to play against them.

"Any striker worth their salt can score goals against that defence. I said before their game against Newcastle.

"Callum Wilson will score goals against that defence even with limited chances.

"They have midfield players playing in there. They are going nowhere with that backline.

"I know it's obvious but you need to sign quality defenders if you want to have a better defence.

"It makes sense they are looking at new defenders, they have to sign someone in January."

Tottenham

Tottenham have conceded 13 goals in nine Premier League games this season.

However, they have only scored nine goals.
