Trent Alexander-Arnold: Keith Wyness taken aback by Liverpool news

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted Liverpool allowing Trent Alexander-Arnold to enter the final year of his contract is “very strange”.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed there will have to be a solution to his future in the next few weeks.

Alexander-Arnold had been spotted on holiday with Real Madrid star and England teammate Jude Bellingham after Euro 2024 – prompting reports of a potential move to the Spanish giants.

The England international right-back has been a revelation for Liverpool since breaking into the first team back in 2016.

Wyness bemused as Alexander-Arnold enters final year of Liverpool deal

He notched three goals and nine assists in 37 games last term as the Reds finished third in the Premier League in Jurgen Klopp’s final season at Anfield.

Speaking on Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast Wyness said: “It’s very strange. There have been a lot of links, people saw him with Bellingham on holiday in LA and that sort of stuff.

“There have been links to Real Madrid but I don’t know. It’s very surprising that Liverpool have allowed Trent to run his contract down.

“He’s crucial and last season he was probably one of their major assets.

“We’re going to have to see where that ends up but as I say there are a lot of question marks around the Liverpool squad at the moment and the spotlight is coming right on it.

“Over the next few weeks, there are going to have to be resolutions.

“Now I know that there will have been discussions behind the scenes between the new sporting director and the Fenway Sports Group and there are things that we won’t be party to.

“Still, things aren’t resolved otherwise it would have been announced – so every week we’re going to be watching what happens.”
