Trevoh Chalobah reacts to his role in viral Chelsea v Man United moment – ‘I was trying’

Trevoh Chalobah has revealed his involvement in a viral social media clip which took place during his time in Chelsea’s academy.

Chelsea have had Chalobah on their books since all the way back in 2007, but the 25-year-old has had to bide his time at Stamford Bridge before making his first-team breakthrough in the past four seasons.

Chalobah made his mark in style with 30 appearances and four goals from right-back in the 2021–22 campaign, but has since transitioned to centre-back despite this area being a crowded field at Chelsea.

A season-long loan spell at Crystal Palace was cut short in January after Enzo Maresca backtracked on his decision to deem Chalobah surplus to requirements, and he’s been a regular first-team fixture since.

Chalobah comments on viral Chelsea clip at Stamford Bridge

As one of a growing number of Cobham academy products to have made an impact in Maresca’s side last term, Chalobah has become part of the furniture at Chelsea since joining the club at eight years old.

The Blues are back in the Champions League next season after a fourth-placed Premier League finish, and will look to return to the glory days of a Premier League title win, one of which came in 2009–10.

Chelsea pipped Manchester United to the title by a point that season and edged them 1-0 at Stamford Bridge in November 2009, a match which saw a home fan go viral by brushing his teeth in the crowd.

Australian outlet Optus Sport posted a clip of the viral incident on Instagram, and Chalobah shared the video on his Instagram story (18 June) after being sat behind the supporter in question as a 10-year-old.

In his re-post almost 15 years on, Chalobah said: “I was just trying to watch a game of football man!”

Chelsea could still sanction Chalobah transfer this summer

Football Insider Verdict

Although Chalobah proved a solid option for Maresca after his mid-season return to Stamford Bridge, the versatile defender could still be pushed towards the exit door this summer amid another Chelsea rebuild.

Another Cobham product is top of Chelsea’s centre-back shortlist in the form of Marc Guehi, but Palace will strike a hard bargain to even contemplate selling their captain as Newcastle found out last summer.

Chalobah still has admirers aplenty at Selhurst Park and Guehi himself paid tribute to the Chelsea loanee after their historic FA Cup Final win, but it remains to be seen if the two England defenders will form any part of a switch across the Thames.
