Tyrone Mings: Mills issues damning verdict as he tips Aston Villa number one signing priority

Aston Villa must sign a “top-quality centre-half” if they are to go to the “next level”, according to Danny Mills.

The former England defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed he is “not convinced” that Tyrone Mings, 28, is an “international footballer”.

Mings had a torrid time as Leeds United came from 3-1 down to draw 3-3 at Aston Villa on Wednesday (9 February).

As per WhoScored (10 February), Mings has made more errors (four) leading to opposition goals than any other Premier League outfielder in the last three seasons.

Mills claimed the England international, who’s been a virtual ever-present this season with 20 league starts, always seems to have a “mistake in his game somewhere”.

“When you look at the recruitment they’ve made so far, attacking-wise they look very good,” he told Football Insider‘s Connor Whitley.

“Phillippe Coutinho will be a game-changer for them. Ollie Watkins looks great – they’ve got a lot of exciting players in attacking areas.

“They just need to tweak it defensively. I’ve always said that I’m not convinced Tyrone Mings is an international footballer.

“There always seems to be a mistake in his game somewhere. If Villa want to go to the next level, I’m pretty sure they’ll be looking for a real top-quality centre-half.”

16-cap defender Mings has made 112 appearances for the Midlands club since joining in 2019.
