Tyrone Mings responds to Morgan Rogers message after Aston Villa heroics vs Brighton

Tyrone Mings has insisted that he got a touch to divert Aston Villa’s late winner against Brighton on goal after Morgan Rogers joked at his expense on social media.

Mings has battled back from injuries to make his mark on Villa‘s season once more, with this now his seventh full campaign at the club since a move from Bournemouth.

Unai Emery’s side faced a toiling Brighton side on home turf on Wednesday, and despite being 16 points ahead of their opponents before kick off, they struggled to find a breakthrough all evening.

Emery handed Mings an eighth league start of the season at Villa Park, and he looked to be the one who had popped up with the all-important winner in the 86th minute.

The 32-year-old centre-back wheeled away in celebration towards the Holte End after the goal, but soon saw the strike taken off him, which drew a witty response from teammate Rogers on Instagram.

Mings met Leon Bailey’s corner late on to give the Villans an important three points, or so he thought he did, as replays showed that it was Brighton midfielder Jack Hinshelwood who diverted the ball into his own net.

The Villa star still took the acclaim in the moment, but the Premier League Match Centre confirmed after the game that the winner had officially gone down as a Hinshelwood own goal.

Rogers took to his Instagram story following the match to post a picture of the pair celebrating the goal alongside the caption: “He’s absolutely done us,” with several laughing emojis.

Mings then replied to his message with a story of his own that read: “I’m telling you, I glanced it,” next to more laughing emojis.

Where are Opta predicting Villa to finish this season?

Villa‘s three points saw them extend the gap between fifth-placed Chelsea to six points, while sixth-placed Liverpool are eight points behind, with the Premier League top five set to win Champions League qualification once more this season.

Emery’s side are six points from league leaders Arsenal as it stands, who have a game in hand, and Opta have given them a slim 1.75 per cent chance of winning the title this season.

They have been backed to finish in third spot, though, with 71.3 expected points and a 92 per cent chance of making the Champions League ahead of their final 12 games of the campaign.
