Unai Emery set to axe summer signings as Aston Villa source reveals new proposal - pundit

Noel Whelan has claimed Unai Emery could axe Steven Gerrard’s signings to make room for new arrivals at Aston Villa.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested Jannik Vestergaard could be a player Emery turns to in order to “bolster” his faltering defence.

Sources told this site on Tuesday (6 December) that Aston Villa are set to be offered the chance to sign Leicester City star Vestergaard, 30, in January.

He is yet to play a single minute in the Premier League this season – and has made just six league starts since joining the Foxes for a reported £15million last summer (2021).

Football Insider revealed after Emery’s appointment (27 October) that Aston Villa are ready to hand their new boss a “huge” January transfer kitty.

The Midlands giants spent a reported £60.5million during the summer window – bringing in the likes of Diego Carlos, Philippe Coutinho, Leander Dendoncker, and Jan Bednarek.

Whelan claimed those arrivals may not be to the “liking” of Emery.

He told Football Insider’s Charlotte Cohen: “They’re looking to bolster their defence – and they need to.

“Unai Emery has come in and he’ll have his own ideas about how he wants his team to line up.

“That’s a difficult proposition for the owners because they’ve already spent a lot of money under Steven Gerrard.

“But some of those players might not be to the liking of Emery.

“There’s no doubt they’ll spend more money in January, but he will have ideas about what sort of player and character he wants.

“Vestergaard is someone who has had a difficult period, but Emery may just see something in him.”
