Preston North End midfielder Daniel Johnson could be the midfielder Steven Gerrard has been missing at Rangers, according to Alan Hutton.
The former Rangers and Scotland defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, suggests that his old Aston Villa teammate has the ability to act as both a box-to-box midfielder as well as a playmaker at Ibrox.
As revealed by Football Insider, the 27-year-old is in advanced talks to join the Gers as Gerrard looks to add creative options to his squad before the window slams shut.
He scored 12 goals and contributed a further eight assists for Preston during the 2019/20 campaign.
As quoted by Sky Sports after the win over Dundee United, Gerrard insisted that Rangers needed to “accelerate” their transfer plans after losing a handful of players to injury.
Ryan Jack and Joe Aribo both look as if they are to be missing for a number of weeks, leaving the Gers light in the midfield department.
Hutton believes that Johnson’s versatility, having played as both an attacking midfielder as well as in a deeper-lying role, means that the Preston man ticks all the boxes for Gerrard as a new signing.
“Gerrard obviously mentioned after the game that he was looking for a midfielder,” Hutton told Football Insider.
“Obviously I know Daniel Johnson from his time at Villa, so I was very surprised at the time when Villa let him go, I thought it was very early, I thought they could have held onto him to see where he went in his career.
“He’s gone to Preston and he’s been unbelievable, done unbelievably well. Last season he played as a number 10 and I think the numbers are there for everyone to see, he’s done really well, but he’s also a number eight in my opinion, he can do both.
“Whether Gerrard’s looking at this move thinking he can do the number 10 or higher up in an advanced position but he can also be the midfielder that he’s looking for, that driving run into the box, scoring goals – I think he could do that as well.
“Round about the number 10 position they’ve got options so I think Daniel Johnson could fit into that number eight role that he’s looking for. Overall, I think it would be a great move.”
