Update from top source on Man United naming Michael Carrick permanent manager

Michael Carrick’s position as interim boss at Man United puts him in the box seat to become the next permanent manager ahead of other candidates.

Carrick got off to the perfect start at Old Trafford as Man United beat Man City 2-0, in a huge victory for the boss which has already got the fans on side.

As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, there is every possibility he could land the full-time role if his side continues to impress.

However, there is also a feeling that United would ideally want to appoint an “elite” manager amid links to the likes of Luis Enrique and Julian Nagelsmann.

Football Insider revealed on 11 January that Man United are lining up a “top-class” manager to become their next permanent boss and are drawing up a shortlist.

Michael Carrick in ‘intense’ race for Man United job

Football Insider revealed on 9 January that Man United could appoint their interim boss into the full-time role if they enjoy a successful end to the season.

Multiple high-profile managers are being spoken about with regard to the permanent position, in what is expected to be an “intense” race.

However, Carrick is in a strong position as things stand and building on the win against Man City will only improve his case to land the role.

Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: “Michael Carrick has got the job now and he’s in the box seat.

“If he does well who’s to say he doesn’t get the job on a full-time basis as well.

“Man United will be looking at all their options in the summer.

“Ideally they’re looking to bring in an elite manager who can get them back to where they should be.

“It’ll be an intense race to see who United go for, because there are a lot of other managers in their thinking at the moment as well.”

Gareth Southgate to Man United ruled out

Gareth Southgate has close links to INEOS and was heavily linked with the role following Erik Ten Hag’s exit, leading to suggestions he could be primed to step in.

Meanwhile, the appointment of Steve Holland, a long-time friend and assistant of Southgate’s, to Carrick’s coaching staff added fuel to the fire.

However, Football Insider revealed on 17 January that Southgate is not on Man United’s shortlist despite having admirers among the hierarchy.

The likes of Oliver Glasner, Andoni Iraola and Thomas Tuchel have also been heavily linked with the role as they continue to assess their options.

United are keen to take their time over their next appointment, hence the decision to bring in an interim boss, but candidates are already being assessed.
