Van Bronckhorst tipped to match Celtic move after ‘big’ Rangers news confirmed – pundit

Noel Whelan has tipped Rangers manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst to look to his native Holland in the transfer market this month.

The former Aberdeen striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the sale of Nathan Patterson, 20, has given the Gers an “opportunity” to bolster the squad.

Patterson completed a move to Premier League club Everton yesterday.

This site revealed on Monday (3 January) that Rangers will receive a club-record potential fee of £16m for his services.

Whelan suggested Van Bronckhorst will be keen to “stamp his authority” at Ibrox by reinvesting the transfer windfall.

“Rangers and Celtic will sometimes have to be a selling club, he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“They have to get these big fees into the club in order to go out and sign two or three players.

“Patterson leaving will give Rangers a real opportunity to go out and either get a replacement or bolster the squad where they see fit.

“It’ll be welcome for Van Bronckhorst too – he’s only just come in. He probably wants to stamp his own authority, and that money could help him do that.

“I imagine he’ll be looking to Holland, similar to how Ange Postecoglou has with Japan. He’ll be sticking to what he knows and using his knowledge of players over there. It wouldn’t be a surprise.”

Celtic

Rangers lead Celtic by six points atop the Scottish Premiership with the two sides set to meet on 2 February.

Postecoglou has bolstered the Japanese contingent at Parkhead this month, completing a triple swoop for Daizen Maeda, Yosuke Ideguchi and Reo Hatate.

In other news, a second Rangers player has agreed a move to an English club.
