Van de Beek tipped to pull Newcastle U-turn after talks latest – pundit

Noel Whelan has urged Donny van de Beek to reverse his decision on a loan move to Newcastle.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, said the 24-year-old needs to regain his “belief and confidence” with regular first-team football away from Man United.

According to the Telegraph on Sunday (16 January), Van de Beek has rejected a loan approach from Newcastle after Eddie Howe’s side offered the midfielder an “escape” from Old Trafford.

The report claims the former Ajax star is unwilling to join the Magpies because of their “perilous league position”.

Van de Beek is yet to start a Premier League game this season.

Whelan suggested the midfielder should reverse his decision in order to nail down a berth in the Netherlands side ahead of the World Cup this winter.

“I’m sure he’d love to show Man United what he can do,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

He’s just not had the opportunity, and this isn’t the first manager who has had him on the bench.

“Somewhere along the line, when there’s a World Cup coming up, he will have to make a decision to try and get that regular first-team football and that match sharpness back.

“He needs that belief and confidence back in his game. If he’s not going to be used at Man United, then he and the club have to be honest with each other and allow him to leave.

“From a personal point of view, he needs to get out there and play football – even if that is at Newcastle in a relegation battle. I can see him changing his mind in the final weeks of the window.”

Van de Beek has made just four league starts for Man United since joining the Old Trafford club in September 2020.
