Virgil van Dijk could be axed from Liverpool XI after what pundit has seen
Frank McAvennie has claimed Virgil van Dijk could be axed from the Liverpool starting XI.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former West Ham striker said either Joe Gomez or Van Dijk should be dropped from the starting lineup against Wolves.
The Reds were beaten 4-1 by Napoli in the first game of their Champions League group stages on Wednesday (7 September).
As shown on BT Sport (7 September), Van Dijk gave away a penalty in the first half of the game after a challenge on Victor Osimhen.
The Netherlands international was booked for the challenge.
Joe Gomez was brought off at half time and replaced by Joel Matip, who made his return from injury.
When asked by Football Insider‘s Charlotte Cohen if either Gomez or Van Dijk should be dropped after the humiliation in Napoli, McAvennie said: “There’s no love lost.

“You can’t, as a player, have two or three bad games. If that happens then you’re out. Then you have to fight your way back in.
“I know that Van Dijk likes Gomez to play with him but it’s not worked. So no matter what Van Dijk wants, the manager has got to change it. If it’s not Gomez who gets dropped it’ll have to be Van Dijk because he’s not hit the ground running either. He’s not been his usual self. It’s a strange one but I’m sure the manager will talk to them.“
