Virgil van Dijk is left speechless as he posts ‘very hard’ Liverpool message
Virgil van Dijk has taken to social media to send a message to disappointed Liverpool fans following their Carabao Cup final defeat to Newcastle United on Sunday.
Just a few weeks ago, Arne Slot had the possibility of completing an incredible quadruple in his first season at Anfield, but that is no longer the case after the 2-1 loss at Wembley on 16 March.
Having been knocked out of the FA Cup and Champions League, all eyes had shifted to the EFL Cup final against the Magpies, but it was yet more disappointment for the Reds.
Eddie Howe’s side were quick out of the blocks, with Dan Burn finally capitalising with a bullet header just before the half-time break, and Alexander Isak, linked with a move to Liverpool, doubling their lead.
Federico Chiesa’s goal in the fourth minute of added time sparked a slim hope of a comeback but it was too little too late as the Magpies lifted their first domestic trophy in 70 years.
Virgil van Dijk promises Liverpool comeback after Newcastle United defeat
Taking to Instagram [17 March], van Dijk wrote: “First of all, congratulations to everyone at Newcastle United. It’s been a difficult and disappointing week for us, and it’s very hard for me to put it into words right now.
“The only thing I can say is that we want to bounce back, and we will! See you after the international break.”
Arne Slot could lose Liverpool stars after first full season at Anfield
Football Insider verdict
It seems like a rather unfair ending if this is to be van Dijk’s final season with Liverpool, with no concrete news over the defender’s contract emerging yet.
Mohamed Salah’s contract situation at Liverpool is also a concern for the fans, and while the Egyptian star has not been his usual self in recent weeks, his stats speak for themselves over the last few years.
Liverpool player | Contract expiration |
Virgil van Dijk | 30 June, 2025 |
Mohamed Salah | 30 June, 2025 |
Trent Alexander-Arnold | 30 June, 2025 |
Slot is likely to make several changes during the summer transfer window, especially with some of the current squad players under pressure from fans or unable to get into the starting XI.
Darwin Nunez is one of the other biggest stars linked with an exit this summer, with supporters becoming more and more frustrated with the striker’s lack of goals and poor finishing.
With the Premier League title all but secured, many fans will be happy with Slot’s first season in charge, but given what they could have won, the disappointment is understandable.
