Waghorn: This is why Rangers players found it difficult under Warburton
By Harvey Byrne
Rangers striker Martyn Waghorn has explained that players found it tough under Mark Warburton due to the constant upheaval in the squad.
The English manager lost his job in charge of the Ibrox giants on Friday evening after it was revealed that the club had accepted his resignation.
Waghorn, 27, had found his position in the squad lessen this season after starring in the last campaign’s Championship winning team.
He was often starting from the bench under Warburton, but on Sunday he was handed a start against Greenock Morton where he managed to get on the score sheet.
Now, the striker has shared that there was an uncertainty around the squad due to the former manager constantly changing the side.
“You could say so. It’s been difficult one. People don’t know if they are playing, they are in and out. There has been a lot of uncertainty at times,” told Waghorn to the Daily Record.
“But you are playing for a big club and people are not going to deliver that on a plate. You have to go out and work for it. Other players and I have been in and out, but it’s important you do your job when you are called upon.
“It’s been difficult for a number of players and a number of different reasons, but it is by now and it is time to move on.
“It has been an eventful few days. but Graeme Murty has come in and done a great job by rallying the boys round.
“The only way we can respond is by winning games of football. We need to keep doing what is essential for this club, which is winning matches. Yes, it’s been difficult and hard, but that’s part and parcel of playing for a big club and we’ve just got to get on with it.”
Waghorn was brought to Ibrox by Warburton in the summer of 2015 from English side Wigan.
He was an instant success in his first season for the club with a very impressive 28 strikes from 36 matches in all competitions.
He will now be looking to improve under the new manager with a return of just three goals in 18 appearances in the Premiership this season.
