Wagner explains why he wildly celebrated winner v Leeds in Monk technical area

David Wagner has explained that he celebrated wildly in the aftermath of Huddersfield’s 2-1 win over Leeds because he does it in Germany.

The Terriers manager entered Garry Monk’s technical area after Michael Hefele had scored a late winner for the home team.

As Wagner entered the technical area to celebrate, he was blocked off by Monk which resulted in a brawl between the two teams.

As a result, both managers were sent to the stands as Wagner’s side clinched a valuable three points against their rivals.

After the game, Wagner gave this reasoning for his actions as reported by Yorkshire Evening post reporter Lee Sobot.

“I have to accept that I do this in Germany,” said Wagner. “But this is not the British culture.”

Despite the ugly scenes after the late winner, both sides provided an entertaining game during the Yorkshire derby.

Izzy Brown had put the home team ahead in the first half before striker Chris Wood levelled eight minutes later.

Hefele scored the winner with a minute left on the clock as Huddersfield have leapfrogged their rivals in the Championship table.

Monk’s side are on 54 points from their 30 games, one point behind their rivals who have a game in hand.

However, the Whites are eight points clear of seventh-placed Norwich as they aim to secure a top six finish.

Neil Warnock’s Cardiff will visit Elland Road next Saturday, before Monk’s team welcome Bristol City three days later.
