Nottingham Forest boss Warburton to raid Rangers for first-team regular – report

By Dominic Toner

Mark Warburton is eyeing a summer move for Rangers ace James Tavernier, according to a report.

The Daily Mail claim that the former Gers manager is planning a swoop for the 26-year-old defender, who can also play in midfield.

It is understood that the new Nottingham Forest boss is planning to raid his old club and has been promised funds in the summer transfer window.

The report details that Rangers’ current manager Pedro Caixinha is currently assessing the options in the squad and it’s unclear whether the defender will be at Ibrox next season.

Tavernier has been a first-team regular for Rangers since he joined from Wigan in 2015, helping the club achieve promotion to the Scottish top-flight last season.

The Englishman has made 36 appearances so far this campaign and his versatility is an important tool.

He is a right-back by trade, but his offensive qualities have seen him play as a right winger on several occasions.

Football Insider verdict:

Tavernier is without doubt an important member in the Gers squad and could have a role going forward under Caixinha. The 26-year-old needs to reigned in a little if he is to become the permanent right-back, with question marks over his defensive skills. However, he is a great athlete and would be a big miss if he left in the summer. Tavernier has demonstrated his skills as a right winger during his 85 appearances for the Scottish giants, scoring 17 goals and supplying 28 assists. Warburton was clearly impressed with Tavernier during his time with Rangers and feels he could help him in the Championship with Forest.
