Wayne Rooney claims ‘important’ Man United star ‘should be in the World Cup squad’
Wayne Rooney has made a bold prediction on who he wants to see in England’s World Cup squad.
Rooney believes there is one star who should be in Thomas Tuchel’s reckoning after Man United’s 2-1 win at Liverpool.
Bryan Mbeumo’s controversial Man United goal opened the scoring, before Cody Gakpo equalised late in the second half.
However, Harry Maguire hit back at Jamie Redknapp with a shock winner with six minutes to go, to hand Man United a first win at Anfield since 2016.

Harry Maguire should be in England World Cup squad
Maguire has over 60 England caps, but the 32-year-old has not played for his country in over a year and has yet to feature under Tuchel.
However, Rooney believes that should change and Maguire’s leadership skills should be a quality that attracts Tuchel to picking the centre-back.
“Harry Maguire for me today shows why he should be in the World Cup squad and I really mean that I think he’s so important,” Rooney said on The Wayne Rooney Show, [20 October].
“I heard Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink speaking about him in that England squad and how much of a leader he is and players look up to him and its the same at Man United.
“He could have completely downed tools and wanted to leave the football club when he had the armband taken off him and that’s not easy for any player.
“Your self pride takes a massive hit when that happens and he’s having to stick there and support Bruno as captain and not play every game and come on for the last ten minutes of games.
“Today [against Liverpool] coming in and playing really well again and showing that leadership and he’s a threat as well, set-pieces are so important.“
Maguire choice vindicated by Ruben Amorim
It was a decision that proved a masterstroke by Ruben Amorim, as Maguire played a pivotal role in earning Man United an important victory.
In the heart of the Man United back three, Maguire protected new goalkeeper Senne Lammens well, who had a second positive performance in-between the sticks.

Maguire has started three of the past four games for Man United, and after his performance against Liverpool, it would seem a harsh call to leave him out against Brighton next.
