Wesley backed for Aston Villa loan exit as record striker bid readied – Phillips
Aston Villa may allow Wesley to leave on loan this summer to make room on the wage bill for Tammy Abraham.
That is the view of former Claret and Blue striker Kevin Phillips, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about Wesley’s future at Villa Park after a season characterised by injury.
Wesley has played just 15 minutes of Premier League football for Dean Smith’s side since returning from an ACL injury last month.
Football Insider understands Villa are planning to loan out the Brazilian centre-forward next season with Dutch giants PSV setting their sights on a summer deal.
It comes as the West Midlands club are plotting a club-record £40million swoop for Chelsea’s Tammy Abraham.
When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs for his assessment of Wesley’s future, Phillips said: “It would make a lot of sense to let him go out on loan.
“It just has not worked out for him at Villa even though I know he has had his injury problems.
“Watkins is the main man at the moment and while he does need help I’m not sure Wesley is the man to do it.
“A loan move would be best for him because he can go and rediscover his form by playing week in, week out. Watkins is going to play ahead of him and if Abraham comes in he’s got very little opportunity to play.
“They might want to loan Wesley out to make room on the wage bill for an Abraham.”
