Kieran Maguire: West Brom could be handed ‘£28m advantage’ amid ‘pushback’ from rivals

West Brom would have a “£28million advantage” over many of their Championship rivals under the EFL’s proposed new financial controls.

That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about a possible overhaul of the financial fair play system.

Uefa has unveiled a model that, among other measures, limits clubs to an outlay of 70 per cent of their yearly revenue on wages, transfers and agents.

Everton

The Telegraph reported earlier this month (8 April) that the EFL now plans to mirror the new regulations in the Championship.

Per The Independent today (19 April), EFL boss Rick Parry emphasised the need to reform the parachute payment system simltaneously.

But such a development would also need the approval of the Premier League.

West Brom are currently in receipt of parachute payments following their relegation from the top-flight in 2020-21.

Maguire claims that the Baggies’ would have a headstart under the Uefa-style system if it is introduced without changes to the parachute model.

“I think there will be pushback,” he told Football Insider‘s Adam Wiliams.

“It will certainly entrench the financial advantages that clubs in receipt of parachute payments have.

“If you have a £40m parachute, 70 per cent of that is £28m. The average wage bill in the Championship is £33m.

“There is a big range in terms of wages but if you’ve got a £28m advantage, that is going to help a lot.”

West Brom

Albion are currently 12th in the Championship after yesterday’s (18 April) 4-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest.

Steve Bruce’s side are next in action against Coventry City on Saturday (23 April).
