Kieran Maguire issues ‘120 per cent’ West Brom claim as ‘dramatic’ overhaul imminent
West Brom would fare well under potential new reforms to the Championship’s financial fair play model.
That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the EFL’s plans to introduce new cost controls.
Uefa has unveiled a new tranche of rules that, among other measures, limit clubs to spending 70 per cent of turnover on wages, transfers and agents.

And The Telegraph reported last Friday (8 April) that the EFL now plans to mirror the new regulations in the Championship.
Maguire predicts that the Baggies would be able to adjust their finances to fall in line with the “dramatic” new FFP conditions.
“The last time that West Brom were in the Championship, their wages were 120 per cent of revenue,” he told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.
“But that was in 2019-20, and they were promoted that season and the wage bill would have been heavily incentivised accordingly.
“I think they should be okay under these regulations, which do represent quite a dramatic change.
“If we go back to 2019, which is the first season after they were relegated, they had a 66 per cent wages to turnover ratio.
“So, if they use parachute payments in the way they were intended, which was to allow the club to divest itself of top-flight wages, I think they’ll be fine.“

West Brom have not yet released their accounts for the 2020-21 financial year.
They recently extended their accounting period from 31 July to 30 June, giving them two more months to file their results.
