Paddy Kenny shares big West Brom prediction that’s just ‘mental’

West Brom will win instant promotion from the “mental” Championship if they keep hold of the bulk of their squad next season.

That is according to ex-Premier League goalkeeper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider after Albion’s 3-1 defeat to Arsenal on Sunday.

That result mathematically sealed the Baggies’ fate and confirmed the first relegation of Sam Allardyce‘s managerial career.

But they will take inspiration from the success stories of Norwich and Watford, who will both play in the top-flight again next season after being relegated in 2019-20.

Kenny urged West Brom to follow their examples and do everything they can to retain their “core” squad.

He told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams: “They only came up this season. It’s a tough league at the end of the day. To get relegated is no disgrace.

“They are known as a yo-yo club. They’ll probably end up going up again next year.

“They need a division between the Championship and the Premier League. They’d be fine then.

“It’s been a difficult season for them. Having no fans around does have an effect.

“I think they might follow Norwich in sticking with the manager, keeping the core of the squad and trying to go straight back up.

“It’s mental how hard the Championship, and it’s getting harder and harder.”

Allardyce was at one point expected to walk away from the Hawthorns if he could not ensure Premier League survival.

But Football Insider now understands that he is ready to stay even after the club’s demotion.
