West Brom hit with £330m hammer blow after relegation – Kieran Maguire

West Brom will continue to contribute towards the Premier League’s £330million TV rebate despite playing in the Championship next season.

That is according to finance guru and Football Insider columnist Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively after West Brom’s relegation was confirmed last night.

The Baggies’ 3-1 loss to Arsenal confirmed their fate and they will return to the Championship after just one season in the top-flight.

The Premier League owes £330m to broadcasters following the pandemic-enforced suspension of the competition in 2020.

Maguire explains that Albion must stump up the cash to pay their share despite playing in the second-tier.

“It’s a double whammy for West Brom,” he told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams.

“A) They’ve been relegated and B) their parachute payments will go down because they are having to give money back to broadcasters.

“Rebates are due to broadcasters after we were originally hit by lockdown and matches weren’t taking place.

“There will be an overall reduction in TV monies because of that.

“My understanding is that those rebates are effectively being spread over three years.

“It comes out of the central pot and affects all the clubs, including those relegated from the Premier League.

“If you reduce the central pot then the money is reduced for everyone.”

The future of Sam Allardyce as West Brom boss is a hot topic following his first relegation from the Premier League.
