West Brom tipped to complete ‘easy’ striker signing after Hugill update – pundit

Newcastle United striker Dwight Gayle would be “the ideal signing” for West Brom in January, according to Paul Robinson.

The former Spurs and England goalkeeper, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested a deal would be “easy to do” given the 32-year-old’s lack of game time this season.

According to The Sun’s Alan Nixon (5 December), Jordan Hugill, 29, is set to cut short his time at The Hawthorns in January.

The centre-forward joined the Baggies on a season-long loan in the summer but has failed to impress.

The Telegraph revealed (2 December) that Valerien Ismael is keen on signing Newcastle outcast Dwight Gayle, 32, to fill the void.

When asked by Football Insider for his assessment of West Brom’s options, Robinson said: “I think Dwight Gayle is the best option.

“His opportunities have been limited at Newcastle and they are going to be looking bigger and better now. I think Gayle would great.

“I thought Karlan Grant would step up in the Championship. That is what his level is. He has proven that he can score a lot of goals there.

“But if they are looking to the Premier League for a loan signing, Gayle would be the man for me. He’d be the ideal signing for them. He is proven at that level.

“You’d think it would be an easy deal to do because he is not playing at Newcastle.”

Gayle spent the 2018-19 season on loan at West Brom.

He contributed 24 goals and eight assists in 41 games.
