West Ham backed to spend ‘big money’ in January after ‘another blow’ – pundit
West Ham must splash the cash and sign some top-tier defenders in the January transfer window.
That’s according to former Hibernian striker Tam McManus, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about “another blow” for the Irons.
West Ham confirmed on 24 November that Kurt Zouma, 28, had undergone surgery on a knee injury.
On 3 December, injury expert and Football Insider pundit Ben Dinnery told this site the defender could be out for up to six weeks after going under the knife.
This would rule Zouma out of the Hammers’ first Premier League game back after the World Cup, against Arsenal on Boxing Day.
McManus insists this is yet another reason why West Ham must invest in their defence this winter.
“It’s another blow, it feels like they haven’t been able to put their best side out,” McManus told Football Insider‘s Ben Wild.
“Zouma is one of those guys who is there every week. So he will be a big miss. Aguerd hasn’t been fit either, there is stuff going on with Dawson.
“None of this is helping with West Ham at the wrong end of the table. They need to invest, for me. I know they spent money in the summer but they spent it on the attack.
“Now it’s time to get a few more defenders in because you need that consistency at the back if you want to keep clean sheets.
“Go and spend big money on top players, guys who will get West Ham back to where they should be.”

Zouma has started all but two of the Hammers’ Premier League games this season.
He has scored one goal.
In other news, Kieran Maguire has tipped an “auction” for West Ham as the “deal of the century” is cited.
