Kieran Maguire reveals how Russia financial fall-out impacts West Ham as 75 deals analysed

Individual clubs like West Ham will not feel the pinch if the Premier League terminates its Russian broadcast deals.

That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the fallout from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Per The Athletic last Thursday (3 March), Premier League CEO Richard Masters has confirmed that the TV deals in Russia are under review.

Man City

West Ham’s broadcast almost doubled in 2020-21 to £163.1m, although it was an anomalous year because of deferred TV income from 2019-20.

The Premier League’s official list of overseas rights holders shows 75 broadcast deals across the globe for the 2022 to 2025 rights cycle.

Maguire insists that the breadth of deals will insulate the Hammers from any negative impact should the top flight scrap its Russian affiliations.

“It wouldn’t have much of an impact on individual clubs such as West Han,” he told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.

“Russia doesn’t pay a huge amount for the rights. The Premier League has been very successful with the rights in the United States and Scandinavia.

“They also have broadcasters paying over the odds in countries like Serbia.

“The bank of broadcasters now is wide enough so that if the Premier League does lose one, the rest can absorb the hit.”

West Ham

West Ham posted a £26.9m loss in their last set of accounts, which were released in January.

David Moyes’ side are currently 6th in the Premier League after their 1-0 defeat to Liverpool last Saturday (5 March).
