West Ham chief David Gold takes dig at Everton on Twitter after young player claims
By Harvey Byrne
West Ham co-owner David Gold has now taken a dig at Everton on Twitter, pointing out that they finished 32 points behind league leaders Chelsea despite handing chances to young players in the last campaign.
The Hammers chief has done himself no favours since the season’s end, making a number of claims on the social media platform stating that it was unlikely youngsters will play for West Ham while they have established internationals in their squad.
Everton, meanwhile have been applauded for giving chances to academy prospects as Ronald Koeman played the likes of Tom Davies, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Mason Holgate and Ademola Lookman over experienced players.
Now, after the England Under-20s emerged victors in the World Cup final on Sunday one fan pointed out to Gold on Twitter that five of the Three Lions’ youth squad had played for the Toffees last season.
However, Gold simply took a swipe back at the Merseysiders via his personal Twitter account, highlighting that Chelsea, who had played no teenagers still finished ahead of Everton.
Many Toffees fans will argue that Gold needs to have some perspective in his argument with Everton not expected to finish above Chelsea ahead of the season and they certainly were not tipped to win the league.
However, they did move up four places after finishing in 11th in the 2015-16 campaign while they will also make their return to European football next season.
Supporters will now be hoping that the young team can grow even better together, while West Ham fans, who once watched their own golden generation with Frank Lampard, Rio Ferdniand, Joe Cole, Michael Carrick and Jermain Defoe will be wondering what the future holds for their academy system.
In other Everton news, the Toffees are in talks with this European duo.
