West Ham expert shares ‘big’ verdict on Jose Mourinho being appointed new manager

Jose Mourinho would be an ideal replacement for David Moyes as he could fix West Ham United’s poor defence.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Hammers and Celtic striker Frank McAvennie hailed Mourinho, 61, for being “defensively solid” and knowing how to win silverware.

The former Chelsea, Man United and Real Madrid boss was most recently at Serie A side AS Roma, where he won the Europa Conference League, but was sacked in January.

The two-time Champions League winner, who recently admitted that he is “ready” to return to management, remains without a new job after reportedly turning down a role at Saudi Pro League side Al Shabab.

Jose Mourinho to West Ham? McAvennie is a ‘big’ fan

McAvennie, who questioned if Moyes wants to remain, claimed Mourinho would not implement his typically defensive style of play but would build a strong backline if he moved to the London Stadium.

“I don’t know if David wants to stay, to be honest,” he told Football Insider.

“Why has he not signed a new contract by now if he wants to stay?

“Graham Potter has been mentioned, Jose Mourinho has been mentioned.

“I’m a big fan of Mourinho – I don’t care what anyone says.

“That guy knows how to win tournaments and win trophies.

“He wasn’t good enough for Man United – he only won the Europa League and the cup!

“Apparently he was a disaster there – really?

“I would love to see him come in.

“He gets criticised for his negative play, but if Mourinho had that team he wouldn’t be negative.

“Anyone can see that the defence needs to be fixed.

“Mourinho is solid defensively – that’s for sure.”
