West Ham expert tells David Moyes which two players must now be sold
West Ham United need to replace their centre-back partnership this summer unless they can prove themselves in the remainder of the campaign.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Hammers and Celtic striker Frank McAvennie slaughtered Kurt Zouma and Nayef Aguerd, the club’s most fielded centre-back duo, for their “terrible” performances in recent weeks.
The Irons have won just four games in all competitions since the new year and have multiple humiliating defeats following shocking defensive displays – most recently their 5-2 thrashing against Crystal Palace last week (21 April).
The backline has come under major scrutiny from the fanbase after an eight-game run in all competitions without a clean sheet.
West Ham United’s defence has been ‘terrible’ – McAvennie
McAvennie claimed that the centre-halves need to “prove they deserve” their spots in the starting XI, otherwise, West Ham needs to recruit at the back this summer.
“They keep buying players that just aren’t fit,” he told Football Insider.
“West Ham need two new centre-backs and maybe a left-back.
“Emerson has been alright with Aguerd – they play well together.
“I would just like to see us have more quality with two big centre-halves.
“Why not?
“They’re half the price of a striker and I would just like to see more quality in those positions.
“It might be cruel to the players in those positions, but football is football.
“Unless you prove that you deserve the adulation from the fans, they need replacing.

“Those two, Zouma and Aguerd, just can’t defend at the moment – terrible.
“If you get two defenders who can defend, then the attacking players can go and thrive.”
