West Ham facing ‘£60m’ blow as Jarrod Bowen edges closer to transfer

West Ham could be facing the biggest financial impact of any club that could be relegated from the Premier League this season.

That is according to football finance expert Dr Dan Plumley, who has exclusively told Football Insider the implications of West Ham dropping down to the second tier for the first time since 2011-12.

West Ham’s 2-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest was a major blow to their hopes of preserving their Premier League status.

West Ham could face ‘significant’ financial hit

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Plumley has explained the £60million hit that West Ham would have to take upon relegation.

“I think for those down there, probably the biggest financial impact would be felt by West Ham,” Plumley said.

“Maybe Wolves as well, but particularly with West Ham because they’re one of those clubs that have been in the Premier League for a long time. You know, some of the clubs in there yo-yo, then you’ve got that net difference between parachute payments and TV money.

But for West Ham, you’re talking between those two numbers, what you would earn in TV and the first-year parachute payment. The reduction in TV revenue is around £60m. So that’s instantly for West Ham to come off the revenue line.

“Now, again, that’s not catastrophic in kind of year one immediate relegation for a club the size of West Ham. But, obviously, you don’t want to get stuck down in that league for too long, and every club is trying to get back while they’ve got those parachute payments for three years. So it would be a significant thing in the finances.

“So £60m reduction in revenue is what we know. The other side of that, of course, is what happens to some of those star players in a relegation scenario, because you would imagine that you are going to probably lose the likes of a Jarrod Bowen.

“You know, [Crysencio] Summerville’s been putting in some good performances. There are big earners there that are likely to go. So, yeah, I think of those down there, you would put West Ham in terms of where the biggest impact might be if you’re comparing those clubs.

“And I think West Ham are in, you know, a bit of trouble there that is not insurmountable, but you don’t want to get stuck in the Championship for too long if the worst case happens.”

West Ham to sanction player sale

West Ham have been active in the January transfer window so far with the additions of Taty Castellanos and Pablo Felipe.

Amid the incomings there could also be player sales, with Guido Rodriguez in talks to join Gremio, with West Ham willing to let the midfielder depart.

The 31-year-old has made just five Premier League appearances this season, and has remained on the bench for the past four league games.
