West Ham have identified Antonio understudy after journalist’s transfer update – Campbell

Kevin Campbell has claimed West Ham can afford not to sign a striker before the transfer window shuts next Tuesday.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Arsenal and Everton forward is adamant Jarrod Bowen could play as a makeshift number nine in the event of Michail Antonio’s injury or suspension.

David Moyes has been working with just one senior striker since the departure of Sebastien Haller to Ajax in January.

According to The Express‘ Ryan Taylor (24 August), the Hammers have rejected the chance to sign a number of centre-forwards in this window.

Tammy Abraham, Alassane Plea, Luuk de Jong and Odsonne Edouard are all said to have been turned down by the Irons.

When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs if West Ham could cope with just Antonio this season, Campbell said:

“I think David Moyes is going to have to play it smartly this season.

“If they don’t sign a striker, which is a possibility with a week to go in the window, and Antonio gets injured someone will have to step up.

“I think Bowen is definitely capable of playing in that role. Benrahma is also versatile so I think he could do a job up there.

“Antonio gives them pace, power and a toughness up there but there is still players who could do a job if needed. I think they could get away with it to be honest.”
