West Ham hit by ‘huge blow’ ahead of Bayern Leverkusen showdown – pundit

West Ham United have received a “big positive” ahead of their clash against Bayer Leverkusen after suffering another “huge injury blow”.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former England and Tottenham goalkeeper Paul Robinson praised Xabi Alonso’s “incredible” side, but suggested they may have celebrated too hard after their historic title win.

The German side’s first-ever title was confirmed after their 5-0 win against Werder Bremen on Sunday (14 April) – just three days after their 2-0 win against David Moyes’ side in the first leg of the Europa League quarter-final.

The Hammers are also set to be without superstar Jarrod Bowen for the crucial tie after he suffered a back injury in their 2-1 victory at Wolves earlier this month.

West Ham have ‘big’ chance of win against Bayer Leverkusen

Robinson admitted that the Englishman’s absence would be a “huge blow” but was confident that they could “take advantage” of Leverkusen’s “hefty” post-title celebrations.

“We’re talking about a Leverkusen side that hasn’t been beaten all season,” he told Football Insider.

“They’re on an incredible run.

“But one thing for West Ham, which is a really big positive for them, is that Leverkusen won the league this weekend.

“Let’s hope that they’ve been out and celebrating too much love the last few days!

“I’m sure Xabi Alonso wouldn’t have allowed that because he will have a big eye on this competition.

“But the hope for them is that Leverkusen may have taken their eye off the ball a bit.

“They’re coming to London on the back of some hefty celebrations which West Ham can take advantage of.

“Without Jarrod Bowen, they are a different team.

“With the likes of James Ward-Prowse, Mohammed Kudus, Lucas Paqueta and Michail Antonio, the creativity is there.

“But the goals that Bowen scores show that he’s their most vital player, so his absence is a huge blow.”
