West Ham make move to sign Joel Matip – sources

West Ham have registered their interest in signing Joel Matip as a free agent, sources have told Football Insider.

But the Londoners are concerned about the former Liverpool star’s durability and physical condition after suffering a cruciate ligament injury last December.

West Ham want a fourth centre-back to provide strength in depth after offloading two defenders last week.

Clubs can sign free agents outside of the transfer window, which closed on Friday night, if they have room in their 25-man squad.

Matip departed Anfield at the end of last season after his contract expired, and he has been a free agent throughout the summer.

The central defender would be able to sign immediately if personal terms were agreed upon.

West Ham could add Joel Matip’s experience to their backline

West Ham are looking for an experienced player who is capable of fitting straight into Julen Lopetegui’s starting lineup.

Having made 150 appearances in the Premier League throughout his career, Matip is capable of doing that.

The 33-year-old is also versatile enough to cover various positions, which could be beneficial to Lopetegui throughout the season.
