West Ham news: David Moyes told not to axe Michail Antonio amid ‘huge’ claim

West Ham manager David Moyes should stick by struggling striker Michail Antonio at Leicester City, according to Noel Whelan.

The former Leeds United striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the Irons “cannot afford to drop” the 31-year-old despite his lack of form.

Antonio has failed to score in his last five appearances across all competitions.

As quoted by the Evening Standard (7 February), David Moyes admitted to having “concerns” over the Jamaica international’s workload.

The Hammers will look to capitalise on Manchester United’s 1-1 draw with Southampton when they travel to the King Power Stadium on Sunday.

When asked if Antonio should be dropped for the match, Whelan told Football Insider‘s Russell Edge: “There’s no doubt that he’s going through a dip.

“He is going through a lull after a period in which everyone was singing his praises. He couldn’t stop scoring goals at the start of the season.

“This is where you want that strength in depth. But, right now, they cannot afford to drop him. They don’t have anyone who can take his place.

“[Jarrod] Bowen can play there but he’s scoring goals from wide areas at the moment.

“Antonio is not being effective. He’s going through a drought but Moyes has no alternative.

“Perhaps he needs a tap in to bring back that belief and confidence. He needs to find his form very quickly because he will be pivotal to where they finish this season. This game is huge and they need Antonio for that.”
