West Ham news: McLeish shares insight on Irons transfer policy after ‘working’ for GSB

Alex McLeish has revealed January signings “were non-existent” when he worked under West Ham owners David Sullivan and David Gold at Birmingham City.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Premier League manager claimed the Irons bosses do not “recognised” the mid-season window as a good time to do business.

West Ham’s hopes of finishing in the top four were dealt a major blow on Saturday after a 1-0 loss to Liverpool at Anfield.

As quoted by Football.London post-match (5 March), David Moyes suggested a lack of signing is costing his “small squad”.

The Hammers did not bring in any players in January despite interest in Kalvin Phillips, Raphinha and Luis Diaz.

When asked by Football Insider‘s Adam Williams for his thoughts on Moyes’ comments, McLeish said:

“My dealings in January were non-existent when I worked for David Sullivan, David Gold and Karen [Brady] back in the day. It was never recognised as a great window for transfers.

“That may be the case at West Ham. They may be keeping the tradition going.

“Is it a disaster if they miss out on the top four? I’m not sure.

“Does this squad have the energy and mental stamina to maintain this high league position? That could be on Moyes’ mind.

“There is a positive from this recent run, they’re out of the FA Cup which means they have less games to play.”
